FAST TRACK TO GENE ANNOTATION AND GENOME ANALYSIS
Sunsetting DNA Subway 1.0

DNA Subway Transition Plan (updated timeline)

DNA Subway has been a trusted platform for analyzing genomic data in the classroom. However, the technology supporting the current site is based on outdated software and services that can no longer be maintained. As a result, security vulnerabilities and system failures will make it impossible to continue operating the existing site. To address these challenges and deliver a modernized experience, we are excited to announce the development of DNA Subway 2.0.

Transition Overview

With the support of the National Science Foundation, the transition to DNA Subway 2.0 has begun immediately. The new platform started with a focus on the Blue Line, providing enhanced support for Sanger and nanopore sequencing. Purple line should be phased in at the start of 2026. Other lines will be phased in later in 2026, offering comprehensive functionality for researchers and educators.

The current DNA Subway site will be removed in early 2026. We are investigating the viability of offering red line guest support for an extended period after this, but it too will be removed by June 2026 even if this is possible.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work to improve the DNA Subway platform and ensure it remains a valuable resource for genomic analysis.

Detailed Timeline

Current DNA Subway

  • After January 1, 2026: The current site is subject to full removal due to security and operational concerns.

DNA Subway 2.0 Development

  • Completed: A version of Blue Line has launched with full support for Sanger and nanopore sequencing.

  • Start of January 2026: The new version of Purple Line (Metabarcoding) will launch.

  • By June 2026: A new workflow for small genome annotation (Orange Line) to replace the Red Line will be released. The Green Line (RNA-Seq) may be transitioned, but this is subject to time constraints, as green line has unfortunately been broken for some time already.
